Dr Edward Bach lived from 1886 to 1936 and was a recognised bacteriologist and physician in England in his time. He trained as a doctor at Birmingham University, and subsequently in Cambridge. After research into immunology, he developed an interest in homeopathy, and joined the laboratories of the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital in 1919. In 1928 he began work on his own remedies made from plants. Dr. Bach became convinced of a connection between mental and physical health, and from 1930 on, dedicated himself completely to finding natural remedies to combat illness by introducing harmony and peace into the lives of patients. To this end, Dr Bach developed a total of 38 remedies, made from the flowers and blossoms of plants, trees and shrubs. Each of the 38 remedies was tailored to specific emotions and states of mind. A 39th remedy, called ‘rescue remedy’, was a unique combination of five of the 38 remedies, to be used for emergencies.
